What makes a person a good leader?

What makes a person a good leader? Is it about how he manage, how he control his obligations, his resources, his people? How good he can communicate to his peers, and doing what is tasked to him accordingly? I believe it is more than that.

A good leader is also a good follower.

This semester, we’re very lucky to have our subject in Business Law 2 – Partnership and Corporation, tasked us to conduct interviews to top management personnel here in the Philippines. We manage to interview a very influential person in his industry, and shared with us his insights. He made an illustration. Have you ever see a cup of water fills itself while it is above the faucet? Certainly not. What is he trying to point out? You can’t fill a cup of water if you are above the faucet. Be humble, so that your superior can pour their knowledge to you. Have you ever experience that? A nagging boss who puts you in so much work, a leader in your thesis group who tasked you greatly, etc. Before we complain, why not do and take responsibility on our task on hand first?

We may have to put time and effort on that matter, but after we accomplish our duties and responsibilities, isn’t it great to feel that we did something we can’t imagine we can do? After all, the best way to learn is from doing, not just from seeing and listening.Act, take actions, be humble enough, and when you think you learned enough from your superior, then that may be the right time to move and find new things to learn from.

A great leader creates more leader.

When you are carrying knowledge, experience and skills from your superiors, your mentors, and the people above you, sharing what you’ve learned to your subordinates will make them also a leader. A great leader is not afraid that his subordinates may be on par or even surpass him because that’s true leadership, creating yourself and duplicating yourself to others. Don't limit your people's knowledge, what they should learn, out of fear that they might take over your place. Why? Because that’s the goal, really. As you learn more, you grow. You’ll vacant your current state in life, your current position for another greater opportunities and tasks at hand. And who’s going to take place on your vacant position? Those people you’ve shared your knowledge and experiences to. Those whom you have duplicated into. Are you going to let incompetent, unskilled people handle your previous job? Are you going to let the people who believe in you be in their current state of life for the rest of their lives? We must empower ourselves first, then we uplift other persons up. In that way, we can become a real great leader in our life.
